A few months ago, Aldi Sport Equipment had a big sale.
For a fraction of the price of a similar sports gear retailer, Aldis equipment had a huge selection of sports equipment including basketballs, soccer balls, tennis balls, hockey pucks, soccer gloves, soccer shoes, and more.
It also had the best price on sports gear in the UK.
This was when Aldi Sports Equipment was still very much a niche item.
And as you can see from the below photo, it still is:It’s not all good news for Aldi, though.
This week, the company said it would be closing the sports gear store it had been in for years.
“We will no longer be selling AldiSportGear in the store in its entirety.
The store will no more be available in the stores,” the company wrote in a blog post.
It said the store had been “a real asset for the company” and was a “major catalyst” for Aldis stock.
In a blogpost announcing the closure, Aldicos chief executive Andrew Jones said the decision to shut down the store was a combination of “significant costs associated with the closure” and a “significant reduction in sales.”
The company is expected to offer “specialised and unique offers” and “deliver more than 5,000 sports products” to customers.
The news comes as Aldi’s shares have tumbled in the past few weeks.
